Watch your Words.
I recently visited a church while seeing family up north. One of the men serving that morning offered an object lesson to the children present. He handed a young girl a bowl and a small tube of toothpaste. He gave her instructions to empty the tube into the bowl. Everyone watched as she squeezed out every last bit from the tube.
The object lesson leader then challenged the girl to put all of the toothpaste back into the tube. The young girl looked confused as the leader repeated his instructions. She, frustratedly attempted to push the toothpaste back into the tube to no avail.
The leader went to explain that it is the same way with our words. Once we say things, once things come out of our mouths, it’s impossible to take them back. He heard the words from the Book of James:
Likewise, the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts. Consider what a great forest is set on fire by a small spark. The tongue also is a fire, a world of evil among the parts of the body.
James 3:5-6
As Christians, we must be very careful with the words we say. Our words are impossible to take back and can do so much damage. But that same power can be used to bring God glory as we use our voices to encourage others and to praise God.
