Keep your Eyes upon Jesus – Fighting Distractions
In my morning devotional today. I was reminded of the importance of spending moments each day completely focused on Jesus and my relationship with Him. We live in a culture where distraction is the norm and focus is elusive.
- We have difficulty communicating with others in a real way because our minds are distracted and we are not truly present.
- We feel anxiety as we are distracted by “to do” lists and schedules that fill our day.
- We allow the “ping” of our phones to set the agenda of our thought life. One statistic in my devotional suggested the average person touches their phone 2,617 times a day!
Distraction is not a new phenomenon. In Luke 10, Jesus is visiting the home of Martha, Mary and Lazarus. Mary sits at the feet of Jesus, focused on Him. Luke 10:40 tells us “But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.” Distraction may not always seem to be a bad thing, but distractions are still…distracting. They take us away from the best thing! When Martha complains to Jesus, He tells her “Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her.”
I pass along to you the challenge I received today: To recognize and remove distractions so that what is best, time with Jesus, can have the priority in our lives that is greatly needed. Have a blessed day!
