Our Story

On September 17, 1989; A small group of nineteen Christians, including six children from the South Venice Christian Church met a the home of Emily Scheffler in Englewood, Florida and organized a new church for Englewood East. The name Church of Christ Englewood  East was selected for the new church.  Plans were made for further meetings and a  search began for a place to meet.

November 12, 1989, forty- one members signed a charter and formed the nucleus of the church.

The Englewood East Church of Christ building was dedicated on January 14, 1996 with 126 people attending.

Jim Ratliff, a native of Pike County, Kentucky, served the congregation of the Englewood East Church of Christ since it was first established in 1989. He went to be with the Lord February 20, 2016.

Jim Chandler accepted the call as Senior Minister in June of 2016.  While change is difficult for most, Jim and the Elders continue to lead the congregation through positive changes in leadership, worship, vision, and facilities.

What To Expect

Worship services are casual at Englewood Christian Church. Dress is casual but modest. You won't find many jackets or ties. We have designated parking for our first-time guests.  We encourage you to arrive about 10 minutes before the service starts so you can grab a cup of coffee and meet people. Our services start with music, a blend of traditional and contemporary.  Our minister shares a bible-based message with practical application to help you live out your faith during the week.  We celebrate communion and receive an offering every week, but there’s no pressure to participate if you don’t want to.  Services are usually a little over an hour, and then you’re welcome to hang out and talk with people afterwards

The first Sunday of each month (except during Summer) we enjoy a fellowship potluck dinner immediately following our morning service. If you are visiting with us, you are welcome to join us, all you need to bring is an appetite! If you have children under the age of 3, we have a team of loving, trained volunteers in our nursery area.  For children 3 years old through 5th grade, we have Children’s Church - a fun, up-beat service that includes music, games and a bible lesson taught at their level.  We encourage middle school and high school students, to join their parents in adult service.

Our Beliefs

We believe the Bible, consisting of 66 books, to be the inspired Word of God, without error, the revelation of His will for the salvation of men, and the divine and final authority for all Christian faith and life.

We believe in one God existing in three persons: Father, Son and Holy Spirit. God has always been and will always be the only God. There were none before Him and shall be none after him.

We believe that the Father created all things in heaven and on earth. He created human beings out of a love for us and desires a personal relationship with each of us.

We believe that Jesus Christ is true God and true man, having been conceived of the Holy Spirit and born of the Virgin Mary. He lived a sinless life and died on the cross as the sacrifice for our sins according to the Scriptures. Furthermore, He arose bodily from the dead and ascended into heaven.

We believe that the ministry of the Holy Spirit is to convict men, making them aware of their sin and the salvation available through Jesus. He regenerates, guides, instructs, and empowers the believer for godly living and service.

We believe that man was created in the image of God and sinless, but fell into sin and is therefore lost and subject to judgment. There is nothing man can do to save himself from this judgment, but he can accept the death of Jesus as punishment in place of his own eternal death by acknowledging God and accepting the free gift of salvation.

We believe that the sacrificial death of Jesus Christ provides the only way of justification and salvation for all who accept God's grace through obedience to the conditions laid out in Scripture:

Belief (John 3:16)

Confession (Matthew 10:32)

Repentance (Acts 2:38)

Baptism by Immersion (Acts 2:38)

We believe that no sin is too big for God to forgive. Therefore, as Christians we should be open and eager to share the Gospel with everyone regardless of their sin or affliction. However, making Jesus Lord of our lives means striving towards holiness and turning from our sinful ways. Therefore, while being open to all sinners, Christians ought not accept, ignore, or promote any sin as permissible.

We believe that Jesus will return just as Scripture describes.  One day the skies will be rolled back, the trumpet will sound and Jesus will come back just as he promised.

We believe the Bible in that all men will stand before God in judgment.  Those who have rejected Christ will be cast into hell with the devil and his demons. Those who have Jesus as their Lord and Savior will be ushered into an eternal heaven.
